How Can I test drive a Linux or BSD Distribution, starting from MS Windows and a USB Flash Drive?

Take 10 minutes, 2 downloads, 1 USB Flash Drive to create a bootable USB flash drive with PuppyLinux  Operating System from any version of MS Windows; Vista, XP, 7, 8   

1. First Download try with Slacko 6.3.2 Puppy Linux .ISO file   200 Megabyte download.Here is the download URL Link  http://slacko.eezy.xyz/download.php   32 bit or 64 bit your choice!
2.  Second Download , Rufus.exe the 1.5 Megabytge USB Writer program for MS Windows  http://rufus.akeo.ie
3. Optional USB Writer program Etcher,  70 Megabytes download for MS Windows, MAC OS, Linux.  URL Link  http://etcher.io Burn images to SD cards & USB drives, safe & easy.
4. Use Rufus.exe or  Etcher.io  to write / burn the .ISO file to a USB Flash Drive.
5. Leave the USB Flash drive inserted and reboot the computer.  The computer should boot from the USB Flash drive.  If not change the BIOS drive boot order to boot from a USB Flash Drive first, the CD-ROM second, and the hard drive third.

Instructions for writing a Linux .ISO file to a USB Flash Drive under Windows

1. Create a new file directory "MyLinuxDistro" under your home directory where you will save the following 2 files:
2. Download a  Linux .ISO file of your choice to this new directory.
3. Download Rufus USB Writer file "rufus.exe" to this same directory.
4. Insert the USB Flash Drive into the USB Port connector on your computer. Choose No Action if a window comes up.  Note what the drive letter of your newly inserted USB Flash Drive is.  Write it down in your handy dandy notebook.
5. Open this new directory "MyLinuxDistro" with File Manager tool.  Double Click on "rufus.exe" MS Windows application program to run/execute Rufus.
6. Select the .ISO file you downloaded for writing into the USB Flash Drive.
7. Read from your notebook, the drive letter: of that newly inserted USB Flash Drive. Select that same USB Flash Drive Letter:
8. Select the other options, Like use ISO Writer format. Select ".ISO Image File" format to write.   Then click Start in Rufus Application.  Wait till the writing process finishes. 
9. You may now Shutdown Microsoft Windows, selecting the "Restart" option.
10. When the BIOS is active, hit the F12 key, to select which device to boot from.  You may also change/modify the BIOS "boot drive order" to try booting from a USB Flash Drive first.  CD-rom disk second, and Hard Drive third.
11. Enjoy booting up your new Linux  or BSD Distro.   Like Slacko PuppyLinux 6.3.2.   Slacko PuppyLinux is a Live Linux distro that does NOT need to be first installed to a hard disk to test out and use.   So, go ahead give Slacko 6.3.2 a test drive on your computer.   Share a USB Flash drive with your friends to test/use on their computer.  Try PuppyPhone SIP: Voice over IP VoIP telephone software.
12. Slacko PuppyLinux creates a persistant "Save File" either on the same USB Flash drive or in a file on your MS windows directory.  This save file stores the changes you made while using PuppyLinux.  Like documents created, application programs downloaded, or desktop configurations.  Next time you boot up PuppyLinux it will all be the same as you left it before.  ie Persistance.    This allows one to carry everything you need (OS, programs, documents) in one portable USB Flash Drive to use on another x86 computer.

How to Install PuppyLinux Dual Boot with WIN 10

Note, you should Disable SECURE BOOT environment for the Dual Boot to work with booting PuppyLinux in a UEFI boot environment.

Secure Boot is a "module" or "add - on" of UEFI. It was forced on the main board manufactures. It can be disabled, by going to the "advanced" tab of the BIOS, and doing two things, enable CSM and Legacy Op Rom.

TrueOS (formerly PCBSD)

I use and run TrueOS (formerly known as PCBSD) as my desktop computer OS.  TrueOS is based on  FreeBSD.org  with added GUI components.  FreeBSD OS runs %45 of the worlds webservers.  So you know it has got to be stable!!



 I am presently testing out GhostBSD with Edimax EW-7811un  nano WiFi usb dongle and an external USB hard disk drive on a Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop.
